Chapter 9

Greer

I was a quivering mess, and I didn’t give a good goddamn. I was right where I belonged, where I had been meant to be for the last ten years. It hadn’t been so long that I’d forgotten just how devoted Thad was to wringing every sensation out of my body that he could, but I hadn’t expected it. Not tonight. If forced to be honest, I’d kept my expectations and hopes low, trying to avoid another cut to my soul in the event he turned me away. Now? Now I was lost to the moment, to the magic that was us.

Every punishing thrust of him inside me drove me higher, had me reaching, stretching, yearning for the blessed but crushing release he’d give me, it was only a question of when. I muttered prayers peppered with profanities, urging him on, in the hope he’d take me to that pinnacle sooner rather than later. We had all night to reacquaint our bodies, right now I needed to feel him pour himself inside me as we both shattered into a million fragments. I needed to be one with him again.

No one knew it, not even my best friend, Lila, back in the city, knew that I’d never been with anyone but Thad. Sure, I went on the dismal dates my friends set up for me, but they rarely went further than one awkward drink or meal. I always found a reason to brush them all off. It’s not hard to do when you belong heart, body and soul to someone else. I took care of my own sensual needs with romance novels and battery-operated assistance. It wasn’t ideal, but it was a life I’d resigned myself to but no more. Now that I knew Thad still wanted me, I was all in.

The tension in my belly wound tighter, my muscles tensing as Thad increased his rhythm, brutally tunneling in and out of me. I screamed in pleasure as my body finally surrendered, my climax exploding within me, ripping a loud wail from my throat. Thad followed me into ecstasy, roaring like a lion declaring his territory. Together we collapsed, sinking to the floor in a tangled, boneless heap.

Long moments passed as we tried to make sense of the world again, our labored breathing evening out, slowing as we huddled together, finally in each other's arms. I was riding a wave of elation, barely able to believe my good fortune, but it was short lived. With a harsh shove, Thad pushed away from me and stood, dragging his jeans back up his thighs and buttoning them just as quickly. He was pale and sweaty, his eyes tortured and filled with pain.

“Damn you for coming back, Greer Knox. Couldn’t you have left well enough alone? Just defended your grandfather and stayed the fuck away from me?” Thad swore harshly, biting off the end of every word.

“But… we just… how can you…” I stuttered incoherently. Wasn’t everything different now?

“My life may not have been filled with adventure and excitement, but I’d learned to live without you.
